6 players made the trek to the Mountainlair on January 12 to compete in the 19th Mountaineer Open. Ed Garner finished with 3.5/4 to win clear first place.
WV Senior Championship
A very dedicated group of six chess players braved the elements and the proximity to Christmas to play the 5th WV Senior Open.
The First place winner was defending champion Ed Garner. Second Place went to John Roush. Third Place winner was Markle Butcher.
The Over 60 and Over 70 class Prize of $100 dollars each was donated by Jim Reszler. The Over 70 award went to Dave Bruner. The over 60 prize went to John Roush.

WV Scholastic League
Here is the announcement for the 2019 WV Scholastic Chess League. Team play is on January 19 and 26. The individual tournament is on February 9.
There will be an announcement forthcoming for the 50th WV Scholastic Chess Championships on March 24 once the details are finalized.

Here is one of Ed Garner’s games from the Senior Invitational Tournament held during the summer. Ed had the advantage in the opening, but let it slip. His opponent then made a mistake in a winning endgame and the game ended in a draw.

The Sept. 29 tournament has been moved from the Bridgeport Library to the Benedum Civic Center on West Main Street in downtown Bridgeport.

Sam Timmons and Lewis Sanders are the 2018 WV State Champions. Each finished with 3.5/5. Pratik Shriwas of Ohio won the tournament with a perfect 5-0 score.
