John Clayton Scherer Sr.

John SchererJohn Clayton "Shorty" Scherer Sr., 75, of Charleston, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 17, 2006, after a short illness. He was the son of Clayton Butler and Lena Mae McClung Scherer. John was very active in sports, physical fitness, and an avid chess player.


John graduated from Charleston High School in 1950. Upon graduation, he attended Virginia Tech. He left college in 1953 to join the Army, and was stationed in Germany. After his tour in the Army, he married Sallye Turley and attended Marshall University.


He retired from DuPont Belle Works Chemical Plant in 1989 with 35 years of service, while there he was a Control Laboratory Analyst. After a few months of retirement, he returned to Dupont as a Contract Chemist for three years. He worked at various jobs, while always remaining an employee of the Charleston YMCA in the fitness center, where he worked until he departed this earth for his new life in heaven with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.


John will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Those left behind to mourn John's passing and celebrate his life is his loving wife, Diane; daughters, Mary and her husband, Mike Woods of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth "Libby" Scherer of Austin, Texas, Anne and her husband, John Locke, of Louisville, Ky., Alma "Toye" Graves of Charleston; sons, John Clayton "Beau" Scherer Jr. and his wife, Sherri, of Nashville, Tenn., Jacob and Joshua Graves at home in Rand; seven grandchildren, Katherine and Elizabeth Woods, Remi and Kross Locke, and Clay, Lucas, and Alyssa Scherer by whom he was called "Poppi." Along with his family, John will be sadly missed by his very good friend, Jesse Madden, he thought of Jesse as a son. John dearly loved children and animals. They all will miss John as we all will.


There will be an evening visitation on Friday, April 21, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home between 6 and 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 22, in Rand, at the Rand Bethel Nazarene Church at 1 p.m. with the Rev.
